What is Climate Change?

Programs of Nature Discovery and Service-Learning for Adults

"What is Climate Change?" with Dr. Paul Doss, University of Southern Indiana Professor of Geology

In short, we’ll answer that question... “what is climate change?” And to get there we need to distinguish among:

  1. the greenhouse effect,

  2. global warming,

  3. climate change, and

  4. global change.

Although distinct, they are inextricably linked. The scientific bases of these phenomena are well-understood, whereas the complex environmental responses to global change are unfolding in front of us in real-time, and in many cases, at a much greater rate and magnitude than originally predicted.

We will have a couple thought exercises to illuminate the science of climate change, we need to examine recent global change and the projected trajectory of continued global change, and finally we’ll try to put the local and regional impacts of global change in perspective.

You may be surprised to learn of the ways that climate change is testing the ability of our society to respond to very real, rapid, and consequential environmental change.
