Tree Ring Science Workshop

Tree Ring Science (Dendrochronology) Workshop - May 2 and 4

Ever wanted to know how old your trees are? Ever thought that the size of a tree indicates its age? Wonder what it is like to core a tree? Discover the answers to these questions when you join Wesselman Woods (WW) for a dendrochronology workshop happening in May 2024.


In each one-day workshop, participants will learn about the fundamentals of tree ring science, the importance of understanding tree ages for forest management, how to physically core a tree, and how to age trees in your own backyard.

Dates

  • Thursday, May 2, from 6 - 8:30 PM

  • Saturday, May 4, from 9 AM - Noon

We welcome Dr. Jim Speer – dendrochronologist (tree-ring scientist) and professor at Indiana State University to guide guests on this educational journey.

This course is open to the public and no prior education on the topic is required. Guests should wear pants, long sleeve shirts and boots or shoes that can get dirty. Headlamps are recommended for the Thursday evening attendees. Seating is limited for each session.

$25 for the public and $20 for Wesselman Woods members or individuals who have completed IMN.

JFL Maple League is for children ages 9-12, and meets the second Saturday of the month from September to April.

Junior Forest League (JFL) is a program that focuses on various environmental topics specific to Southern Indiana. League members will have the chance to engage with their local ecosystem, collaborate with like-minded Evansville peers, and (most importantly) participate in fun team building activities and games.

The goal of the Junior Forest League is to ignite a mindset of environmental stewardship and community engagement. Each month, we will focus on a new topic, incorporating animal encounters, guided hikes, citizen-science projects, and science projects/activities. We make specific adjustments to each session to match Indiana Academic Standards and Earth Charter principles.

Nature's Greatest Sight: Festival for Total Eclipse

JOIN US FOR NATURE’S GREATEST SIGHT: THE 2024 TOTAL ECLIPSE!

Monday, April 8, 2024 beginning at 11 AM

Event Mission: To bring together diverse communities in a safe space to enjoy nature's greatest sight as well as food, performances, and music. Commune with the eclipse; enjoy as one.

  • Located on the former “Par 3” golf course in Wesselman Park

  • Festival begins at 11 AM

  • Hard stop on all festival activities at 1:45 PM to prepare for 2:00 PM total eclipse

  • Partial phase of the eclipse will last about an hour and the total eclipse will last 3-4 minutes.

You are invited to witness the total solar eclipse happening on Monday, April 8th, 2024 at the former “Par 3” Golf Course in Wesselman Park. The festival will begin at 11 AM and it will feature activities, musical performances, food trucks, and more!

COME PREPARED!

  • Don’t forget your safety eyewear and sunscreen! We will have a limited number of eclipse glasses for sale.

  • Internet signal and cell phone strength may be shaky! Come prepared to make purchases with cash, just in case.

  • Make sure to arrive early to secure a parking space in the former Robert’s Stadium parking lot.

    • The Boeke Road entrance to Wesselman Park parking will be CLOSED with limited space inside the park reserved for volunteers, entertainment, and food trucks.

  • Feel free to bring along your picnic blankets and chairs. You can pack a lunch, too!

  • Food trucks will be available. See the list below.

  • We kindly ask that if you pack it in, please pack it out. Which means, please take all your items and all of your trash with you – let's leave the area as beautiful as we found it!

Junior Forest League (JFL) is a program that focuses on various environmental topics specific to Southern Indiana. League members will have the chance to engage with their local ecosystem, collaborate with like-minded Evansville peers, and (most importantly) participate in fun team building activities and games.

The goal of the Junior Forest League is to ignite a mindset of environmental stewardship and community engagement. Each month, we will focus on a new topic, incorporating animal encounters, guided hikes, citizen-science projects, and science projects/activities. We make specific adjustments to each session to match Indiana Academic Standards and Earth Charter principles.

Little Eco-Scholars is a program which introduces early learners to environmental and ecological principles through exciting and thoughtful games and simple projects. Eco-Scholars explore their five senses in the Nature Playscape.

Our program is designed to build on imaginative skills through playing in the local ecosystem. Some of our problem-solving activity topics include: invention, memory, new experiences, decision-making, empathy, and many more! We encourage parents/guardians to participate with their toddlers during this program. Our programs are aligned with Indiana’s Early Learning Foundation.

  • Program Age Range: 5 and under

  • Dates: Fridays at 9 AM in the Nature Playscape

  • Program Cost: Free with paid admission to the Nature Center, free for members! Preregistration is required.

All sessions will focus on two overarching themes: birding 101 and conservation. We aim to provide environmental education, introduce you to elements of citizen science, encourage family bonding, and give you skills that you can take outside of Wesselman Woods.

    • Small birds pack a lot of energy into their tiny bodies. Learn about what it takes for little birds to survive in this big world.

    • Each year, many species of birds make heroic journeys to find more resources as the seasons change. Find out more about the obstacles in their way.

  • MAY 25 - Bird Anatomy ⧫ Library Day

    • Not all birds are created equal! Learn how to identify different parts of birds and how to ID birds in your backyard. EVPL joins us on this journey of discovery with additional activities!

Eclipse Explorers

In April 2024, the Evansville region will experience an event that won’t happen again for another 400 years: a total eclipse! On March 23, children ages 8-12 are invited to Wesselman Woods for a FREE interactive session about the science behind the eclipse.

RSVPs are REQUIRED and spots are LIMITED

This total solar eclipse will cause us to be in complete darkness for 3 minutes and 3 seconds in the middle of the day. Join our area’s NASA/JPL Solar System Ambassador Mandy Scurry to learn about eclipse science, culture, history and art while collecting ways to make the most of this remarkable event happening in our own backyards.
